The End of Men

...The End of Men Casper Pedersen 2.a Men have always been the dominant force in western society both economically and politically. Most top jobs belong to men and the majority of the world’s influential politicians are male, such as Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin and the Chinese president Hu Jintao. Because of this male dominance, men have led the way of culture and society for ages. But all of this may be about to change in our postindustrial era. In her article, “The End of Men” from the magazine The Atlantic, July/August 2010, Hanna Rosin argues that woman are in fact well on the way of taking over the role as the dominant cultural force. But is she right when she proclaims “The End of Men”? Hanna Rosin builds up her article in order to convince her readers that women are playing an increasingly influential role in society and are ultimately replacing men’s status as the dominant sex. She does this by referring to developments in the job market, in education and politics and in the pop industry. In all these important fields she sees a tendency towards female power. Her argument is initially built on facts, “Earlier this year, women became the majority of the workforce for the first time in U.S. history. Most managers are women too. And for every two men who get a college degree this year, three women will do the same” (ll. 1-3). These facts speak to the reader’s intellect and builds up a trustworthiness, so that the reader feels that Rosin is right in pointing......

Of Mice and Men

...John Steinbeck was born in 1902 in Salinas, California, a region that became the setting for much of his fiction, including Of Mice and Men. As a teenager, he spent his summers working as a hired hand on neighboring ranches, where his experiences of rural California and its people impressed him deeply. In 1919, he enrolled at Stanford University, where he studied intermittently for the next six years before finally leaving without having earned a degree. For the next five years, he worked as a reporter and then as caretaker for a Lake Tahoe estate while he completed his first novel, an adventure story called Cup of Gold, which was published in 1929. Critical and commercial success did not come for another six years, when Tortilla Flat was published in 1935, at which point Steinbeck was finally able to support himself entirely with his writing. In his acceptance speech for the 1962 Nobel Prize in literature, Steinbeck said: . . . the writer is delegated to declare and to celebrate man’s proven capacity for greatness of heart and spirit—for gallantry in defeat, for courage, compassion and love. In the endless war against weakness and despair, these are the bright rally flags of hope and of emulation. I hold that a writer who does not passionately believe in the perfectibility of man has no dedication nor any membership in literature. Steinbeck’s best-known works deal intimately with the plight of desperately poor California wanderers, who, despite the cruelty of their......

...Eat plenty of vegetables, legumes and fruits a) This is important because we get many vitamins and minerals from these food groups. We need these micronutrients to perform and regulate many different functions in the body. We also get some energy from sugar and starch. Each type of fruit and vegetable gives us different nutrients, so we should make sure to eat several serves each day of different ones. We can also get some fibre from legumes, and a little from other vegetables and fruit. Fibre helps us avoid constipation, decreases our risk of colo-rectal cancer, slows down the absorption of sugar and is good for the health of our GI tract. a) I did not eat enough fruit or vegetables. On one of the days I ate no vegetables at all, and on the other two days I ate only two or three serves of salad. The guidelines tell me that I should eat five serves of vegetables each day. I ate one piece of fruit every day, but I should eat two so this isn’t enough. b) I hate vegetables so I rarely eat them. I do eat some kinds of salad (e.g. tabbouleh) but I can’t stand cooked vegetables. My family doesn’t eat vegetables as part of our diet, so there is no encouragement for me to eat them. I like fruit and I make sure to eat it every day because I know it’s a healthier snack than chocolate or crisps, but I didn’t know that I should eat two serves every day....

Abina and the Important Men

...Abina and the Important Men Abina and the Important Men: a Graphical History was written by Trevor R. Getz and Liz Clarke. The story of Abina Mansah is somewhat an inspiring graphical history based on an 1876 court transcript. Abina, a woman of West Africa, was wrongfully enslaved and as a consequence, she took her former master, Quamina Eddoo, to court. The overall setting took place on the Gold Coast during the 19th century. The main scenes take place in the court room, which is filled with many “important men.” The men included a British judge, two Euro African attorneys, countrymen, and an entire jury of wealthy, high class local town leaders. This book is broken down into several parts; the graphical history, transcript, historical context, reading guide, and classroom version. All of these parts combined help to reconstruct and create a better interpretation of the story of Abina Mansah. The Gold Coast at this time was under English rule as the British began to abolish slavery. Abina was born into one of the protectorates, Asante, and enslaved in her youth. She was formerly the wife of Yaw Awoah and sold to her former master, Quamina Eddoo, to begin working in his sister Eccoah’s household. While staying at Eddoo’s plantation, Abina was told she had to marry, against her will, Tando. Tando was a man of Eddoo and because Abina didn’t want to marry him, she was told if she didn’t she would be flogged. “They say that in Cape Coast all are free.”(Chapter 1 page 7) ......

Why Is Oral Health Important for Men?

...Why is Oral Health Important for Men? Men are less likely than women to take care of their physical health and, according to surveys and studies, their oral health is equally ignored. Good oral health recently has been linked with longevity. Yet, one of the most common factors associated with infrequent dental checkups is just being male. Men are less likely than women to seek preventive dental care and often neglect their oral health for years, visiting a dentist only when a problem arises. When it comes to oral health, statistics show that the average man brushes his teeth 1.9 times a day and will lose 5.4 teeth by age seventy-two. If he smokes, he can plan on losing twelve teeth by age seventy-two. Men are also more likely to develop oral and throat cancer and periodontal or gum disease (“Why Is Oral Health Important for Men,” 2010). According to Lara (2010), since maintaining a good oral health is vital, you must strive to observe the proper ways of oral hygiene (1). Aside from personal practices such as brushing, gargling, and using dental floss, it is advisable for you to visit your dentist every 6 months. Moreover, it is necessary that you should inform your dentist not only of your dental, but also your medical history or recent health problems. Your dentist is usually one of the first individuals to detect and diagnose a health problem and he can help you in identifying these diseases in their earliest phase. In conclusion, people are advised to......

Of Mice and Men

...Character Analysis Essay A time of sickness, bankruptcy, and underground liquor runs; the 1930’s were a devastating time in which our protagonists lived. Of Mice and Men is a classic book by John Steinbeck. Published in 1937, this tale shows the adventures of two poor men, George and Lennie, who are suffering in the Great Depression. The book goes through a portion of their life through different places and roads. Lennie, I believe, is the most interesting character. Lennie shows his strengths and flaws from Of Mice and Men by having a big heart but bigger hands, helping keep George sane, and accidentally killing animals and people. Lennie has extraordinary physical strength, but his mind does not have that type of power. His head and heart did not know what to do when Curley started punching him and: “he was too frightened to defend himself… Curley’s fist was swinging when Lennie reached for it. The next minute Curley was flopping like a fish on a line, and his closed fist was lost in Lennie’s big hand” (69). Lennie’s brain could not comprehend the events developing around him and his body initially shut off in the process. If it was not for George yelling at him to fight back Lennie could have been really hurt. Some might say fighting is wrong all together, but if it is not possible to walk away from it then it is important to defend yourself. Even though it took him a while to be convinced to hit Curly, it only took a couple seconds to end the fight when he grabbed his......

Men and Women

...Amanda Popular Culture Pop. Culture Essay #1 Addressing the Issue: Men’s Men and Women’s Women The vast majority of people, with the exception of transvestites and other people with physical deformities, can be put into one of two categories; man or woman. Generally, the views and expectations one has for their own gender and the views and expectations one has for the opposite gender can be described as gendered stereotypes. Although stereotypes are not always close to the truth, in some cases they can hold some weight to an argument when they present the generalized representation of a certain group or groups. In this essay I will show how gendered stereotypes are used by advertising companies to appeal to each gender. Here in the U.S., you need not go far to bear witness the very apparent signs of genderfication and gendered stereotypes, tools used by advertisers that play important roles in our consumer-styled society. One only needs to go as far as their living room couch and turn on the television to be bombarded with shows and advertisements containing gendered images of the expectations our society has for its men and women by men and women. Author Steve Craig puts these gendered ideals into four distinct categories; Men’s men, Men’s women, Women’s men, and Women’s women (Craig). For this essay I will analyze four video advertisements, and, using Craig’s criteria, I will try to see under which of his categories each advertisement would fall and why.......

Abina Essay

...Shanice Corlette March 26, 2013 HIS 112 (001M) Abina Essay In the story of “Abina and the important Men”, Abina Mansah is a West African who finds herself enslaved and in the town of Saltpond, where she was sold by her former master into the house of Quamina Eddoo. Quamina wants her to marry a man in his house but Abina does not want to marry him so she runs away to Cape Town in an effort to become free from slavery as she believes and live a life of her own and independent. If she hadn’t run away they might have beat her senseless till she wanted to marry. Throughout the chapters, Abina tries to fight for her rights as a “free slave”. She sends Quamina Eddoo to court for purchasing her and keeping her as a slave. She testifies against him in court and it brings out a stir of emotions along with what she and others believe is slavery or not. Magistrate Melton’s conception of slavery clearly illustrates that he does not have the same as Abina. Legally, he believes there is no slavery. He does not want to start a war against the Asante again because it was very expensive, and would cause a disturbance if they went around liberating slaves. James, counsel to Quamina Eddoo, does not believe this is slavery at all. He believes they are being protected by important men and if all “so called slaves” wanted to sue their guardians for doing work or getting little beating, then it would be chaos. Mr. Davis does not see it that manner. He believes the British is of great power...

Of Mice and Men

...Of Mice and Men is one of the most widely assigned modern novels in high schools because of both its form and the issues that it raises. John Steinbeck’s reliance on dialogue, as opposed to contextual description, makes the work accessible to young readers, as does his use of foreshadowing and recurrent images. Equally important is the way in which he intertwines the themes of loneliness and friendship and gives dignity to those characters, especially Lennie and Crooks, who are clearly different from their peers. By focusing on a group of lonely drifters, Steinbeck highlights the perceived isolation and sense of “otherness” that can seem so overwhelming when one is growing up. Of Mice and Men is also important because it explores the way in which events can conspire against the realization of one’s dreams. It pits a group of flawed individuals against a set of circumstances that they are unable to master or, in the case of Lennie, even to comprehend. This is a theme that Steinbeck also explores in his classic novel The Grapes of Wrath (1939). When Steinbeck began Of Mice and Men, he was planning to write a children’s book called Something That Happened. His intent was to demonstrate that events often have a momentum of their own and need not reflect the existence of a higher power that is exacting punishment. Perhaps it was for this reason that he decided to retitle the book, drawing from Robert Burns’s oft-quoted poem “To a Mouse,” which contains the line “The......

1950's Men & Today's Men

...1950’s Men and Today’s Men The gender role theory “posits that boys and girls learn to perform one's biologically assigned gender through particular behaviors and attitudes” (Boundless, 2015). The environmental causes of gender roles and the impact of socialization are emphasized by the gender role theory. The social role theory postulates that the social structure is the underlying force in determining gender roles. The social role theory also states that the division of labor between two sexes within a society drives sex-differentiated behavior. The division of labor is what created gender roles, which eventually, led to social behavior that could be defined as being gender specific in nature. Over the years, these roles would transform to adapt to the expectations of society’s current males. One popular trend of gender roles that has been commonly studied is workplace roles. For decades, men were viewed as the sole provider; therefore, the wife’s duties did not exceed past her home. She was in charge of caring for her husband, their children, and their home. Men were supposed to go to work every day to provide for their family, adequately meet all of their needs, and be someone that his children can look up to. In the 1950’s, men were coming back from war, and the women had filled the positions left open by men going off to World War II. During the 1960’s, known as the hippie era, gender roles began developing in a more neutral and equal manner, “but media still tried......

...reaches the "performing" stage, hard work leads directly to progress towards the shared vision of their goal, supported by the structures and processes that have been set up. Individual team members may join or leave the team without affecting the performing culture. As leader, you are able to delegate much of the work and can concentrate on developing team members. Being part of the team at this stage feels "easy" compared with earlier on. Project teams exist only for a fixed period, and even permanent teams may be disbanded through organizational restructuring. As team leader, your concern is both for the team's goal and the team members. Breaking up a team can be stressful for all concerned and the "adjourning" or "mourning" stage is important in reaching both team goal and personal conclusions. The break up of the team can be hard for members who like routine or who have developed close working relationships with other team members, particularly if their future roles or even jobs look uncertain. Conflict resolution modes [pic] Compete (I win - You lose) Competitive style negotiators pursue their own needs - yes, even when this means others suffer. They usually don't want to cause others to suffer and lose, they are just so narrowly focused on their shorter term gains that they plunder obliviously through negotiations like a pirate. They often use whatever power and tactics they can muster, including their personality, position, economic threats, brand......

...Why is International Trade important? International trade takes the world’s economy to the top position. It is important to carry out the trading at international level as some of the resources that are available in some countries are not available in others. So those people who do not have the resources with them can have the resources by importing them from other countries. So, trading becomes important and necessary in this scenario. Trading internationally involves sending what the native country produces the best to other countries and buying what other countries are producing best. This trading can improve the economy of the native country and helps in development of the country. International trading decreases poverty, generates employment, develops the economy and increases the income of the nation. The country which is in developing stage can consider the international trade as an advantage as it brings lot of financial gains to it. The funds that are acquired through trading internationally can be utilized in their best for the needs of the people in the country. Most of the developing countries tend to improve industrialization. But, they also were observed to get the raw materials available as resources with them to the international market. Some of these materials include timber, agricultural products and minerals. The Sub Saharan African nations earn about ninety percent of their income through international trading by exporting the raw......

Ordinary Men

...Ordinary Men Christopher Browning’s book, Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland, examines how ordinary men in Reserve Police Battalion became such cruel, cold-blooded killers. During World War II, the Police Battalion 101 helped cleanse out Poland as part of the Final Solution. The Final Solution was Nazi Germany’s plan to execute all European Jews during the World War II. Most of the Battalion 101 were made up of working class or lower middle class from Hamburg area, with majority of them falling in the age between 37 to 42, which “would not seem to have been a very promising group from which to recruit mass murderers on behalf of the Nazi vision of a racial utopia free of Jews” (Browning, pg.48). As ordinary as the men of the Battalion 101 were, the question remains how most men in the Battalion became killers and what caused this behavior. Browning cities several theories to how such ordinary men could commit such atrocities, such as “wartime brutalization, racism, segmentation, and routinization of the task, special selection of the perpetrators, careerism, obedience to orders, deference to authority, ideological indoctrination, and conformity” (Browning, pg.159). Out of these theories, conformity is the most important reason how the ordinary men in the Police Battalion 101 became killers. The Reserve Police Battalion 101 was a group of ordinary men from Hamburg, with most men not having any experience in any kind of......
